The Table Topics Evaluator evaluates the Table Topics speakers. The table Topics Evaluator does NOT evaluate the Table Topics Master. That is done by the General Evaluator.
What are Table Topics ?
Table Topics® is a long-standing Toastmasters tradition intended to help members develop their ability to organize their thoughts quickly and respond to an impromptu question or topic.
- Table Topics begin after the prepared speeches.
- The Toastmaster of the Day introduces the Topics Master, who gives a brief description of Table Topics.
- The Table Topics Master then calls on volunteer respondents, usually starting with members, so that guests see an example. However, if a Table Topic Master chooses to select speakers, that is fine too. It is less typical, but it’s a valid choice too.
- Table Topics are designated for 1-2 minutes unprepared, improvised speeches, with 30 seconds for preparation.
- Each table response should express respondent thoughts clearly and succinctly, as in a mini-speech (with opening, body and closing).
Guidelines
Meeting Duties
- Prior to the Meeting
- Become familiar with what Table Topics are and what to expect from the Table Topics Speakers. Refer to What are Table Topics ? and Table Topics Resources sections of this article.
- During the Meeting
- Listen carefully to each speaker!
- Write down each speaker's name.
- Notice where they are sitting in the room so that you can look at them and include them when you give your evaluation.
- Take notes on each speaker.
- Don't try to write everything down or you may get lost in your notes later.
You have to evaluate a number of speakers with little time to prepare. Make sure to distribute the time evenly for all the evaluated speakers (often, the very last speaker being evaluated is cut short). Because of the timing constrains, the key to a successful evaluation is not to provide a thorough evaluation of each speaker but to pick out 2 things the speaker did well and 1 point for improvement. Include some examples in your evaluation. Be respectful and focus on skills and accomplishments rather than personal attributes.
Evaluation Tips
- Evaluating Speeches Tips
- Refer to Prepared Speech Evaluator, sections: Observation Notes and Evaluation Tips.
- Table Topic Specifics Tips
- Points for Evaluation:
- Did the speaker time the speech well?
- How well did the speaker answer the question?
- Did the speaker answer the question right away or did they take their time (taking time is recommended, this can make a difference in contests)?
- Did the speaker support their answer with appropriate arguments, opinions, and/or exam?
